A strong and thriving Jewish future depends on each and every member of our community.
For generations, Federation CJA has been our community’s safety net, allowing us to fulfill our obligation to care for one another. Together, we help parents put food on the table and find safe, low-cost housing for their families. We help at-risk youth break the cycle of poverty and Holocaust survivors live out their lives with dignity. We match hundreds of candidates with jobs here in Montreal, and help those with special needs fulfill their potential.
But the need is growing. One in five Jews in Montreal lives below the poverty line, including 3,655 children under the age of 15. Governmentcutbacks have resulted in an increasedreliance on our community organizationsto fill the gap. And our numbersof economically productive adults havedeclined, thereby impacting our abilityto deal with our more vulnerable.
Did you know?
Close to 4,000 Montreal Jews in crisis are helped with their emergency needs and set on a path to a brighter future.
Approximately 3,000 Jewish candidates acquire vocational support for job placement, training and counseling in Montreal.
20% of our Jewish community is made up of senior citizens. We must ensure that as their needs increase, so does our response.
Last year, Federation CJA helped 2,166 youth at risk. Services such as counselling, mentoring, educational and employment support ensure that the most vulnerable youth in our community reach their full potential.
Last year alone, over 14,000 individuals benefited from kosher cafeterias, food banks, food baskets and vouchers that we provide. Federation CJA served over 27,000 free, hot, kosher meals at Le Café. We helped people like Stuart.
“Every Tuesday and Thursday evening, I eat dinner at Le Café. I’ve been coming here since the first night it opened, around Purim 2009. I like the food and the people I meet here, but my favourite thing is the volunteers. They all make me feel so welcome every time I walk through the door. Because of this community, I feel like my needs are truly understood.” – Stuart
